Getting Started: Vegan Living

Some of my personal favorites that launched my life as a vegan…

Overview of Veganism: Health Benefits and the Facts of Animal Cruelty

The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone

Alicia’s book is really fantastic. In her down-to-earth and downright conversational writing style, she charts step by step her process of becoming vegan and provides in-depth detail of the reality of animal cruelty. Likewise, although her book is not a cookbook per se, she provides some yummy recipes to get you started.

Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis, R. D. and Vesanto Melina, M. S., R. D

This book gets into the nitty-gritty of the nutritional aspects of veganism – where to find protein once you stop consuming meat and where to find calcium once you stop consuming dairy. Its writers are also great carb-advocates, making it a winner in my book.

Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer

Alas I myself am still making my way through this book, but I already know that you should read it! It covers many of the details of the reality of animal cruelty and is an absolute must-read. You’ll be shocked by what you learn.

Vegan Cookbooks

Vegan Yum Yum by Lauren Ulm

I’ve tried many of the recipes in this book and honestly have not found a single one I didn’t like. When you start it, definitely check out the Creamy Tomato Barely Risotto and the Sweet Miso Salad Dressing – they’re to-die-for!

The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau

One of my biggest concerns when I went vegan was baking. I used to love to bake and I couldn’t imagine making something tasty without using butter, eggs, or milk but this book proved me completely wrong, I’m happy to say! Definitely start with the cinnamon coffee cake or the cornbread. They’re two of my favorites!

Supermarket Vegan by Donna Klein

Lots of non-vegans think that vegan cooking has to be tricky but this book proves otherwise. Using ingredients anyone can find in their local supermarket, these recipes are quick, easy and delicious. And, unlike those other books, I actually can’t pick a favorite recipe – there are too many to choose from!
