Vegan BBQ: Black Bean Burgers

Beantown Vegan is back in business!! I’m still in the process of migrating everything over to the new platform (and selecting an appropriate photo for the header; yikes!) but in the meantime, a wee post from last year at this time…

You may have guessed it (although you might not believe it)… summer has finally arrived!  Being a cold weather person, I must admit I was fine with the fact that chillier weather decided to linger in Beantown last month: just a few more weeks to snuggle up with my plush piggie from Henrietta’s, some hot port and a good book in the evening.

But now that the sunshine is here, I must also confess that I’m delighted it’s finally arrived. I may be condemned to wearing my hair in braids, buns and the occasional chignon for the next few months, but I also get to try new recipes.

Last weekend, I decided it was time to buckle down and make myself a black bean burger… so I whipped out my cookbook, screwed my courage to the sticking place, and marched back into that kitchen.

How pleased I was!

Taken from 1,000 Vegan Recipes, the burgers were absolutely delicious: moist on the inside, crispy on the outside, and ever so slightly spicy. And, like any good recipe, they went splendidly with a nice big glass of wine.

That said, I think perhaps the flavor of the burgers could have been slightly more complex. A veggie burger for example would have a burst of flavors brought on by the various vegetables. These burgers however were most definitely black bean burgers and (perhaps) a wee bit one-dimensional in that respect. But, they were just so moist and cozy — definitely to be added to my arsenal of vegan comfort food. AND, being the working girl that I am, I must also point out how easy they were to make. They took me about half an hour in total.

And thus I must conclude that while I have most definitely found a new weeknight go-to recipe, I must continue my quest for the truly sensational and downright spiritual vegan burger…. until next time.
